In a galaxy powered by the current, everyone has a gift.
Cyra is the sister of the brutal tyrant who rules the Shotet people. Cyra’s currentgift gives her pain and power — something her brother exploits, using her to torture his enemies. But Cyra is much more than just a blade in her brother’s hand: she is resilient, quick on her feet, and smarter than he knows.
Akos is the son of a farmer and an oracle from the frozen nation-planet of Thuvhe. Protected by his unusual currentgift, Akos is generous in spirit, and his loyalty to his family is limitless. Once Akos and his brother are captured by enemy Shotet soldiers, Akos is desperate to get this brother out alive — no matter what the cost.
The Akos is thrust into Cyra's world, and the enmity between their countries and families seems insurmountable. Will they help each other to survive, or will they destroy one another?
Carve the Mark is Veronica Roth's stunning portrayal of the power of friendship — and love — in a galaxy filled with unexpected gifts.
WHAT I THINK
That's just a quote from the book. I think it's not even possible for me to lie and say I liked this book. Just 2 stars, honestly one for Cyra and one for Akos. These two were literally the only damn reason I pushed myself through the whole damn book. And yet, I was left hanging on some cliffhangers which I'll get an answer from the second book, I think. And that is of course only if I decide to ever read that book.
At the start of the book I was still thinking that why people were giving so low ratings for this book. There were some action starting at the start already, isn't that a good thing? I mean you don't have to read million pages before something actually happens. But the further I got, the more I wanted to DNF this. But anything for Akos and Cyra. These two are definitely new pair for me to ship and Akos might be my new book boyfriend, though I might be a little too old for him, LOL.
Most of the time I was kind of lost with everything. Where they were now, what is this place again, why are they doing that, what is going on etc.. Sure I could blame myself for kind of getting distracted a lot while reading but also I think the world building could have been a lot better. I mean I liked Divergent, I really did. Also it might have something to do with the fact that I had high hopes for this book also. I had heard a lot of hype about this, I think I should have actually read some reviews on this one to know the truth?
Then the story itself. There were a lot going on all the time, which is better than just stomping on the same place all the time. But still I feel that it was going nowhere. I mean, someone did something to make Ryzek angry -> get Cyra -> carve the mark -> start it all over again, most of the time! There were twists of course but even after the first one, I think, everything kind of continued the same. The ending, no surprises there. But I'm a little bit mad of the cliffhangers though.
So yeah.. I can't think of anyone I'd actually recommend this book to. It has been translated in Finnish so I could do that to my sister or friend whom read in Finnish but honestly? I'm not going to do that. I'm pretty sure that my sister wouldn't even finish this, if she ever even picked it up.
